RECORDINGS, REVIEWS & COMMENTS
Each student auditioning will produce a digital file (private YouTube video) or DVD of the graduation level piece, accompanied by piano (Graduation Repertoire Requirements). These are mailed or emailed directly to the designated listener/commentator who will review all of the applicants for that level. See the Apply page for listener/commentator contact information. The listener/commentator will then review the recording and offer written remarks. The teacher who is listening to a specific level will lead that piece at the graduation concert.
The listener/commentator will determine the outcome of the playing exam. It is up to the home studio teacher to make sure his/her student is prepared and able to pass the graduation testing level. In keeping with Dr. Suzuki's guidelines, basic standards are expected for each student submitting a recording including: correct intonation, tempo, rhythm, tone quality, and musical interpretation. Vibrato is included for Level 3 and up.
Listeners/commentators will be experienced and respected teachers chosen by the event chair and SAGA board members.
The required repertoire does not change from year to year for a couple of reasons. First, the pieces are the same ones used for the graduation concerts in Japan. Second, for the upper levels, it makes it easier for the more advanced students to join in playing the upper levels at the concert. Third, it helps in keeping the standards consistent.
